Most photography is judged by how it looks. Documentary photography is judged by what it proves. On 2 October 2015, at Pant Walavalkar Ground in Khopoli, we documented 3,721 children dressed as Mahatma Gandhi, and every frame had to stand up in front of Guinness World Records adjudicators.

Documentary photography when the picture is the evidence

A record attempt turns a photographer into a witness. Our task for the "I Am Gandhi" campaign was to capture, validate and document. That changed how we planned the day.

  • A beautiful photograph that cannot be checked is useless.

  • A plain photograph that proves a fact is priceless.

  • The best frames do both.

What happens behind the scenes

  1. We turn the rulebook into a shot list. The attempt was for the largest gathering dressed as Mahatma Gandhi. Every rule about attire and counting became a shot we had to get.

  2. We walk the ground first. Where does the light fall? Where can the cameras stand? Where will children hide behind other children? We plan the layout so that nobody does.

  3. We shoot from above and from the ground. 4K aerial cinematography shows the whole gathering in one view. Ground-level close-ups show the costumes, glasses and dhotis, the details that prove each child is dressed correctly.

  4. We audit before we count. Forensic costume checks happen before the count, not after. A challenge raised later can cost the record.

  5. We keep every file in order. Originals, labelled and backed up. The evidence package is part of the deliverable, not an afterthought.

Lessons we carry into every shoot

  • Plan the light and the ground before the day. A good position is worth more than a good lens.

  • Shoot for two audiences. The viewer who loves the picture and the checker who needs the proof.

  • Label as you go. Evidence that cannot be found is evidence that does not exist.

  • Keep a backup of everything. On a day like this, there are no re-shoots.
